Create a new template

You did it! You created a padlet with the perfect layout for all of your future projects! If only you could save it, so you don't have to remake it multiple times. 🤔

Welcome to Templates!

In the Make a padlet menu, you will see two categories:

  • Your templates
  • From the gallery

The Templates you have created yourself or have been shared with you will be shown under 'Your templates.' The pre-made Templates we have provided for you to spark some ideas are under 'From the gallery.'

If you don't see anything under 'Your templates' in the Make a padlet menu, it is because the padlet's Link privacy is set to Secret. The creator of the Template will need to add you as a collaborator or provide the link to you. If you access the link, you can Bookmark it to use later! The creator can also change the Link privacy to Team/Org-only.
If you don't see any Templates in your 'Gallery,' it may be because you're not listed as a school user. You can change this by opening your dashboard > click the three-dot ellipsis button (...) > Settings > Basic info > Account type. Change this to Student, Teacher or School staff.

Create your own Template

Any padlet can be marked as a Template. So, how do you do it? Whether you're using a padlet that has already been created or you're making one now - you can create your Template by following these steps:

  • Open the desired padlet and click on the three-dot ellipsis button (...) on the right-hand side of the page
  • Select Mark as template

Your padlet will now be clearly marked with a Template tag at the top next to your title. It will also be easily spotted on your Dashboard.

Sharing Templates

If you plan on sharing your Template with others on a shared dashboard, it is a good idea to set your Visitor permissions to Reader and Link privacy to Org/Team only. This way, the other users have access to the Template in the Make a padlet menu. If you pick the Template from the Make a padlet menu, it will automatically produce a Remake of the Template that you can edit without affecting the original.

Let's say the owner of a Backpack account creates Templates to have available for all teachers to use. Using the settings Reader and Org/Team only will ensure the teachers can see the Templates in the Make a padlet menu and can now Remake the Template from the original and post it for their students. The teachers can then change the Visitor permissions to Writer to allow their students to post on the padlet!

If you see a Template someone has shared in the Make a padlet menu but it's not on your dashboard, the creator of the padlet will need to either add you as a collaborator or click the 'Display on org/team dashboard' toggle button ON.

Accessing created Templates

So, you've made a few Templates, your teacher made some and you're pretty sure your best friend in your English class made one, too. Where can you find them? When creating a padlet and marking it as a Template, it will only show up in certain areas based on the Share settings. Different settings determine the visibility of the Template for others, as well. There are three main places you may see your Templates pop up.

  • In your All folder
  • After clicking the pink 'Make a padlet button,' you'll see them under 'Your templates'
  • In your Templates folder

See below how different Share settings affect the location of your Templates.

No access/private: Only the creator and added collaborators can see the Template and only in the Make a padlet menu. It will not be displayed anywhere else.

Org/Team only (with 'Display on org/team dashboard' toggled OFF): Collaborators and creators will see the Template in their All folder, Templates folder and Make a padlet menu. All other members of the org/team will only see it in the All folder. If you wish for the Template to be in all three places for everyone within the org/team, you will need to turn ON 'Display on org/team dashboard.'

Secret/Secret-password/Secret-login: Only the creator and added collaborators can see the Template. The creator can only see it in their All folder. Added collaborators can see the Template in their All folder, Templates folder and Make a padlet menu. No one else will have access to the Template unless they have the link. If these users want to save the padlet, they can Bookmark it!

Do note: If the creator changes the Visitor permissions to No access at any time, it will be removed from your Bookmarks. It will return if the creator changes it back.

Public: Everyone can see the Template. While it won't appear in your All folder, Templates folder or the Make a padlet menu, it will show up in your Recents tab after you view the padlet.

Creating a new padlet from your Template - 'Remaking' it

To create a new padlet from a Template, use the Make a padlet button. Go to your dashboard and click on Make a padlet > Your templates. Select the Template you'd like to build from.

Your new padlet will copy all posts and wallpaper from your Template, as well as retain the privacy and permissions set by the creator. The title of the padlet will also be copied over but will include the date, as well. Feel free to keep these as is or change them by clicking on the Settings cog icon (⚙️) in the panel on the right-hand side of the padlet.

When creating a padlet from a Template the authorship will transfer to the user making the padlet. There is no option to change this.
When creating a new padlet from the original Template you will need to use the Make a padlet button and select your desired Template under 'Your templates.' Accessing the Template from the All or Templates folder will only open the originals - not create new ones. To create a new padlet from a Template when clicking on it from one of the folders, you will need to Remake the padlet. Be sure to click Copy design and Copy posts when Remaking the padlet this way.

Don't feel like creating your own Template? Feel free to use any of the beautifully made, pre-populated Templates from our Gallery! Click on the pink Make a padlet button on your dashboard > Scroll down to the 'From the gallery' section > Pick your Template!

There are over 100 options ranging from general purpose to those that are useful in an educational setting! To read more about our pre-made Templates click here!

Enjoy using Templates! Doesn't life seem so much easier now? 😊

FAQs

Why is the Template missing from the 'Make a padlet' menu? My All folder? My Templates folder?
Templates will only show up in this menu based on the Share settings that the Template was created in.

Public: Everyone can see the Template. While it won't appear in your All folder, Templates folder or the Make a padlet menu, it will show up in your Recents tab after you view the padlet.
Why can't I mark someone else's padlet as a Template?
Only Admins and creators of a padlet have this permission. If the creator has allowed Remakes - you can Remake the padlet and then mark it as a Template on your own account.
I invited a user to my Secret-password padlet as a collaborator. Why didn't they have to put in the password to access it? Is my padlet still protected?
No worries! Everything is still protected by your password. Adding a user as a collaborator overrides the password protection. Anyone not a collaborator on the padlet will still need to enter the password.
I only see a few templates in my Gallery templates. Where are all the others?
If you cannot see all of your Gallery templates, it may be because you're not listed as a school user on your profile. To change this, click the three-dot ellipsis button (...) in the bottom left corner of your dashboard > Settings > Basic info > click the pencil icon next to Account type and change to Student, Teacher or School staff.
