Create a new template
You did it! You created a padlet with the perfect layout for all of your future projects! If only you could save it, so you don't have to remake it multiple times. 🤔
Welcome to Templates!
In the Make a padlet menu, you will see two categories:
- Your templates
- From the gallery
The Templates you have created yourself or have been shared with you will be shown under 'Your templates.' The pre-made Templates we have provided for you to spark some ideas are under 'From the gallery.'

Create your own Template
Any padlet can be marked as a Template. So, how do you do it? Whether you're using a padlet that has already been created or you're making one now - you can create your Template by following these steps:
- Open the desired padlet and click on the three-dot ellipsis button (...) on the right-hand side of the page
- Select Mark as template

Your padlet will now be clearly marked with a Template tag at the top next to your title. It will also be easily spotted on your Dashboard.

Sharing Templates
If you plan on sharing your Template with others on a shared dashboard, it is a good idea to set your Visitor permissions to Reader and Link privacy to Org/Team only. This way, the other users have access to the Template in the Make a padlet menu. If you pick the Template from the Make a padlet menu, it will automatically produce a Remake of the Template that you can edit without affecting the original.
Let's say the owner of a Backpack account creates Templates to have available for all teachers to use. Using the settings Reader and Org/Team only will ensure the teachers can see the Templates in the Make a padlet menu and can now Remake the Template from the original and post it for their students. The teachers can then change the Visitor permissions to Writer to allow their students to post on the padlet!
Accessing created Templates
So, you've made a few Templates, your teacher made some and you're pretty sure your best friend in your English class made one, too. Where can you find them? When creating a padlet and marking it as a Template, it will only show up in certain areas based on the Share settings. Different settings determine the visibility of the Template for others, as well. There are three main places you may see your Templates pop up.
- In your All folder
- After clicking the pink 'Make a padlet button,' you'll see them under 'Your templates'
- In your Templates folder

See below how different Share settings affect the location of your Templates.
No access/private: Only the creator and added collaborators can see the Template and only in the Make a padlet menu. It will not be displayed anywhere else.
Org/Team only (with 'Display on org/team dashboard' toggled OFF): Collaborators and creators will see the Template in their All folder, Templates folder and Make a padlet menu. All other members of the org/team will only see it in the All folder. If you wish for the Template to be in all three places for everyone within the org/team, you will need to turn ON 'Display on org/team dashboard.'
Secret/Secret-password/Secret-login: Only the creator and added collaborators can see the Template. The creator can only see it in their All folder. Added collaborators can see the Template in their All folder, Templates folder and Make a padlet menu. No one else will have access to the Template unless they have the link. If these users want to save the padlet, they can Bookmark it!
Do note: If the creator changes the Visitor permissions to No access at any time, it will be removed from your Bookmarks. It will return if the creator changes it back.
Public: Everyone can see the Template. While it won't appear in your All folder, Templates folder or the Make a padlet menu, it will show up in your Recents tab after you view the padlet.
Creating a new padlet from your Template - 'Remaking' it
To create a new padlet from a Template, use the Make a padlet button. Go to your dashboard and click on Make a padlet > Your templates. Select the Template you'd like to build from.
Your new padlet will copy all posts and wallpaper from your Template, as well as retain the privacy and permissions set by the creator. The title of the padlet will also be copied over but will include the date, as well. Feel free to keep these as is or change them by clicking on the Settings cog icon (⚙️) in the panel on the right-hand side of the padlet.
