How to add Padlet to Canvas LMS using LTI 1.0?

Adding Padlet to Canvas LMS using LTI 1.0

Deprecation notice: LTI 1.0 will no longer be supported by IMS Global from June 2022 onwards. We do not offer this connector for new users. Existing users should migrate to the new LTI 1.3 standard.

There are two different types of integrations for LMS available in Padlet, namely LTI 1.0 and LTI 1.3. For the LTI 1.0 tool, each padlet has to be added individually as an external tool in each individual assignment using ALL the steps below.

This article will describe how to connect Padlet to Canvas using LTI 1.0. If your Canvas version supports 1.3, you may use our new connector described in this article.

What you need

  • Access to the Teacher account on Canvas
  • Access to the Teacher account on Padlet for Schools
  1. View App Configurations on Canvas

Courses > Settings > Apps > View App Configurations

  1. Go to the 'Add App' screen: + App
  1. Fill in the Add App Form

A form that looks something like the below, should pop up. Keep 'Configuration Type' as Manual Entry.

We'll head back to Padlet and copy some details into this form.

  1. Add to your LMS as an external tool

Open the specific padlet you want to add on Canvas and click on Share. You should see the option to Add to your LMS as an external tool. Go ahead and click on that. You'll be presented with some information that you'll need to copy and paste into Canvas.

  1. Fill in the form on Canvas

  1. Once done, click on Submit.

Here is a sample screenshot with filled fields.

  1. Create a new Assignment

Add the specific padlet to the Assignment in Canvas. Click on Courses > Assignments > + Assignment.

  1. Add External Tool

Head to 'Submission Type,' indicate External Tool and click on Find.

Note: Do not add a padlet link to the field.
  1. Add padlet as an external tool

Depending on what you named it previously, find the padlet on the list of tools and click on it. Then, click on Select.

  1. A link should show up in this field. Save and Publish or Save this Assignment.

The padlet should show up like this on Canvas! If you want to add more padlets to different assignments, just run through the steps again.

Additional sharing options

If you want students to work on their own copy of the padlet, in Step 4, select the option for Everyone works on their own copy of this padlet. Students will get their own copy when they click on the link in the assignment and you will be automatically added as a shared member to the padlet.

Turning ON this option changes the Custom parameters for the padlet, so either turn it on before copying the parameters in Step 5 or update the parameters in Canvas if the padlet has already been added.

Note that turning ON the copy option will prevent you from seeing all student posts in a single padlet.

Troubleshooting tips

If you've tried the LTI 1.0 connector before and have since switched Canvas accounts and are trying to connect again using the same connector, you may hit an error that looks something like:

"We made a wrong turn. We've encountered an error and are working to fix it. Drive safe!".

This is probably because each Padlet for Schools account can only connect to one LTI 1.0 LMS account at any point in time. You may want to consider using LTI 1.3 for Canvas as that limitation does not exist in our LTI 1.3 integration. Otherwise, please contact us to reset your LTI 1.0 connection.
