Padlet is retiring LTI 1.0 and 1.1, effective August 1, 2026. This guide walks Padlet for Schools admins through the migration.

Setup takes 15 to 30 minutes. The longer part is coordinating with teachers to re-add padlet embeds, so we recommend doing this over a school break.

What's changing and why

1EdTech, the organization behind the LTI standard, deprecated LTI 1.0 in 2022 for security reasons. LTI 1.3 is the replacement, and every major LMS supports it: Blackboard, Brightspace, Canvas, itsLearning, Moodle, and Schoology.

What happens to your existing padlets

Your content is safe. No padlets, users, or data will be deleted.

Existing embeds still load. Teachers and students can still open them from your LMS. They become regular embeds, but they won't use the LTI connection anymore.

The thing that changes is login. Today, students opening a padlet through LTI 1.0 are signed in automatically. After August 1, that stops. Users will need to sign in to Padlet manually, and your LMS will no longer identify who's contributing.

You don't need to disconnect anything. We'll turn off the LTI 1.0 connection on our end. You just need to set up LTI 1.3.

To restore automatic sign-in, set up LTI 1.3 and re-add padlet embeds. Setting up LTI 1.3 gives you the new connection. Old embeds stay as regular embeds until a teacher removes them and re-adds them using the new LTI 1.3 tool. That teacher coordination is why we recommend migrating over a break.

Before you start

Have admin access to both your Padlet for Schools account and your LMS. If a separate IT team manages your LMS, loop them in early.

Confirm your LMS supports LTI 1.3. Blackboard, Brightspace, Canvas, itsLearning, Moodle, and Schoology all do. If you're currently on LTI 1.0 or 1.1, both are being retired. If you're on something else, reach out to us, and we'll check.

Pick a low-traffic window. A school break is ideal.

How to migrate

Steps depend on your LMS, but the shape is the same:

  1. Log in to your Padlet for Schools Admin account.
  2. Go to Settings > LTI and follow the LTI 1.3 setup instructions for your LMS.
  3. Update the Padlet tool configuration in your LMS with the new credentials.
  4. Test by launching a padlet from your LMS.

LMS-specific instructions

Most platforms support Dynamic Registration, which lets you paste a single registration link instead of filling out a long form. Your Padlet for Schools “Organization info” page has the link if your LMS supports it. That's almost always the fastest path.

After you migrate

Do a test launch from your LMS to confirm it's working.

Then let your teachers know about their existing embeds. Old ones keep loading the padlet but won't use the LTI 1.3 connection until they're removed and re-added. Share our teacher guide with them so they know what to do.

You don't need to do anything with the old LTI 1.0 connection. We'll turn it off on our end.

FAQs

Will my pricing or contract change?
No. Your subscription, renewal date, and pricing stay the same.
Will any padlets be deleted?
No. Everything is preserved.
Do I need to disconnect LTI 1.0 myself?
No. We'll handle it for all Padlet for Schools accounts.
Will my teachers and students lose access to existing padlets?
No. Existing embeds keep loading as regular embeds. What changes is that users will no longer be signed in automatically or identified as contributors. They'll need to sign in to Padlet manually.
Do teachers have to re-add every padlet embed?
Only if they want LTI 1.3 features (automatic sign-in, contributor identification). Otherwise, old embeds keep working as regular embeds with manual login.
What if our LMS doesn't support LTI 1.3?
Contact us and we'll work through it. Existing embeds keep loading after the cutoff, but you won't be able to add new LTI-connected padlets.
Can teachers keep using padlets during the migration?
Yes. Padlets work normally throughout. Only the LMS login experience changes.
What about LTI 1.1?
LTI 1.1 is also being retired on the same timeline. If your account uses LTI 1.0 or 1.1, the migration steps are the same.
